Chapter 9 – Veritaserum

Mingi kept eye contact with Jongho as he stalked into the room, looking like he expected an attack at any moment. Their other friends silently filed in behind him. Wooyoung shut the door softly behind the last of them with his head bowed. Whatever had made him rush towards the door in the first place must have not been successful. He had whispered an apology to Mingi as he passed. Mingi had clasped his friends’ hand but gave him no other acknowledgement.

But…why? Was this related to Mingi’s secret that was mentioned back in their home base?

They awkwardly gathered in a half circle, with Hermione opposite. Yeosang had his back against the door, and Wooyoung was still stood next to him.

So,” San said and broke the tension. “This is an odd place to meet.”

Jongho agreed – it really was. It looked like a long forgotten storage room, which was at odds with how new the castle was. Who would have taken all the effort to make it look like this? And why? Shouldn’t those old books be in the library?

Well,” Hermione said tentatively, looking between Mingi, Jongho, and San. “Actually, it’s the new room of requirement – for this castle, anyways. Or, well, one of them, at least. And I…well,” she said and blushed. “I was just thinking about old books, and…and…”

It’s okay – you don’t have to finish that thought,” Seonghwa said gently. His words were laced with concern, and all eyes snapped towards him because of it. Seonghwa only used that tone for them and his family, never strangers. Hongjoong’s eyebrows disappeared into his hairline, and Yunho’s mouth popped open a bit. Jongho wondered if Seonghwa had already met Hermione somewhere else and just never told them.

Do you know each other?” San asked the obvious, looking at Seonghwa with a raised eyebrow. If even he was surprised, that was a new one. San was almost never surprised by anything, and if he was – he often got over it before it showed.

All of them knew who Hermione was, of course. And Yeosang even had a not-so-secret-but-also-a-secret crush on her even though he had only ever read about her in the papers. He was gently glaring at Seonghwa, and Jongho noticed the look with a bit of amusement. Even though they knew who she was, none of them had met her before today. At least that’s what Jongho thought.

No, but – well. C’mon,” Seonghwa said and sighed impatiently before putting his hands on his hips. “You guys aren’t that out of touch with emotions – I know you’re not. She’s clearly embarrassed about something to be blushing like that. So we don’t need her to explain what she thought about when she opened the room – we all know how the room of requirement works. Although I do wish,” he relaxed his arms and looked around, “that there wasn’t so much dust everywhere.”

Wooyoung snickered at that, and a few of the others bit their lips. Of course Seonghwa would be thinking about how to clean the place. Or maybe it was a clever distraction, Jongho realised, since Hermione smiled gently and looked around at the dusty surfaces. Yeosang almost sighed with relief, but caught himself quickly.

Jongho smiled at his friends’ plan, and used it as a segue into figuring out what was going on. “How did you guys get here so fast, though? I thought Gryffindor was the first to get sorted? There’s no way McGonagall could have fit in everyone else by now,” he said.

Gryffindor wasn’t first,” San replied as if it was obvious.

What?” Wooyoung spat. “The fat lady even said we were first!”

Well, she lied. Or maybe didn’t know. One of the two,” San said with a shrug.

How could she,” Wooyoung said and threw his arms in front of him, palms up. He was only being half serious. It was one of his ways of helping to quell the tension, and sure enough more snickers went around the room. He must have caught onto Seonghwa’s plan, too, and was helping out in his own way. Typical Wooyoung. But Mingi hadn’t moved his eyes away from Jongho this whole time.

I think you guys were third, to be fair. Ravenclaw was last,” Hongjoong said. “We rushed here right after.”

But the affiliate common room was, like, empty. Why were we the first to arrive there?” Wooyoung said. He looked genuinely surprised at this new information.

Probably because that’s what Gryffindor’s do?” San said with a smile and winked.

Wooyoung tilted his head to the side and his face lit up with a wide smiled. He had nothing to say to that.

But now that was settled…there was only the big stuff left. Jongho realised that he probably wouldn’t find out anything else until they dealt with it. It was time.

So since we’ve sort of caught Hermione up on events,” Jongho said and suppressed the urge to gulp, “maybe now is a good time to finish what we started before?” He looked between Mingi and San. Was this why everyone was here?

San clapped his hands. “Yes. Let’s. Have a seat – sometimes this potion gets a little intense. Or we can always tackle you like we did with Wooyoung.”

Jongho was in the middle of shaking his head for no to the tackling, when Hermione spoke.

Potion?” she said and shifted uncomfortably. “The anti-confundus potion?”

Right. She had wanted to take it to see if she could remember anyone suspicious. Her memories were fuzzy after it had been cast, protected in part by the defences she had put on herself just in case before arrival.

Oh – so she’s not entirely caught up, then?” San said and raised his eyebrows again, looking between her, Wooyoung, and Jongho.

She had just asked what Seonghwa was hiding at the platform when you guys apparated into the hallway,” Jongho said, testing out a theory before Wooyoung could explain. It worked, and the effect was instantaneous. Mingi and Yeosang twitched at the same time as if they shared the same thought. Wooyoung bowed his head and clasped his hands in front of him. The rest, except for San, shifted their weight from foot to foot.

So whatever was going on – whatever Mingi’s big secret was – it had to do with magic, and how they had been able to track them down to this hallway so fast.

Did you tell…” Mingi began, but Wooyoung’s head shot up and he interrupted.

I swear on my life that I didn’t.”

Mingi frowned, but stayed silent. His gaze searched Jongho, but Jongho couldn’t read anything behind it this time.

Hmm. Okay,” San said and clucked his tongue. He thought for a moment and then looked at Hermione who had been observing everyone carefully. “Well, long story short – the 8 of us are friends and something weird happened this summer. We got some strange letters and…” He paused when Hermione bit her lip. “Wait. Don’t tell me you got one, too?”

She shifted her eyes around for a minute and then replied slowly, “We – I mean, Harry, Ron, and I – all got them. But we were together at the Burrow all summer, so we thought it was just a strange prank.”

San crossed his arms. “What did they say?”

What did yours say, and why is it causing tension between you?” Hermione quipped.

They stared each other down, but San gave in first with a sigh. “I suppose that makes sense,” he said as if they had been talking telepathically. “Anyways. We got a letter that we thought was from Jongho, saying that he wouldn’t be well enough to meet up with us all summer. But then we saw him appear in the paper as if he was fine. None of our owls reached him. Just as we were about to track him down, we got another letter. And it…”

Mingi grumbled a warning, but San waved him off. “I know, I know,” he said in pout at Mingi, and then turned back to Hermione. “It basically made us suspicious of each other. It talks about the dark lord returning because of one of us, but the clue is vague.”

Hermione drew in a sharp breath. “Do you remember what it said specifically?” she asked.

San nodded and recited from memory again, “One among you isn’t what they seem. Know them by the lions mane, or not – it’s hidden deep, but a threat to you all. The dark one will rise again if they remain unchecked.”

Jongho watched Hermione’s mouth fly open, before she reached inside her cloak to pull something out of a hidden pocket.

This,” she said, “Is one of the letters we received. It’s not quite the same wording, but, well – let me read it.” She opened it and read it out loud. “New and old all the same; know them by the lions mane. The Dark Lord will rise again should they fail.”

She paused to think, and then added, “Actually, it’s not quite the same, is it?”

San’s brows were bunched together as he was deep in thought, but it was Yeosang who broke the silence. “No, it’s not,” he said and then addressed his friends. “I told you so. We shouldn’t have suspected any of us were capable of it in the first place. I told you we should have told him and taken him with us. You know that means we’re not the ones behind this –noneof us.”

Jongho’s gaze snapped over to Yeosang. He – along with Hongjoong and Yunho – hadn’t been at their home base after arrival, so he didn’t know how they had felt about any of this until now. But if Jongho was hearing this correctly, then this might explain why Yeosang kept shooting dark looks towards him and Mingi back on the platform: Yeosang didn’t agree with keeping secrets from him.

Jongho had a feeling there was something behind it back then, but he didn’t expect this. Why had they left him out? Was he even ready for the answer? He gulped, and Yeosang continued.

Luckily I’ve brought along some…”

He doesn’t know about that part yet, Yeosang,” Seonghwa said quietly.

Yeosang’s brows shot together and he frowned. “You haven’t told him Anything that we did this summer?”

As we agreed,” Mingi said in a commanding tone. “And this changes nothing. He takes the veritaserum, and then we talk. Without her,” he said and angled his head towards Hermione.

Jongho’s stomach flipped as he heard this. It wasn’t something that happened often, and he wasn’t going to ignore it. Before anyone else could say anything, Jongho blurted out, “No. She’s with us, now. Make her take the veritaserum too, if you need to. But she’s…she stays with us. And I won’t have it any other way.” Everyone gave him a weird look, and Yeosang blushed ever so slightly.

Jongho couldn’t get the words out to explain what he was feeling; to explain that he could relate to her, wondering if he’d ever have his friends back. If he could even fit in anywhere else, or if he was going to spend the entire year alone. Tonight’s revelations had been hard for him, even though he had been trying to show a brave face.

And it was clear that Hermione was suffering in similar ways. So he wasn’t going to set her adrift in the middle of it. One night of feeling like he was losing his own friends was enough to show him that he couldn’t let someone else go through it.

Mingi settled his features into a glare, but San threw his hands up in surrender. “Fine, fine. That breakup did look rather nasty – I’m sorry about that, Hermione. I really am. But maybe you’re better off. There was a surprise waiting for us in Slytherin that might interest you later, if it’s any consolation. But let’s get things going with this, for now. Jongho first. Come. Sit.”

********

Jongho took the veritaserum and within minutes, he was telling his friends every intricate detail of his life over the summer. It felt like he was on cloud nine – as if sharing like this was a great gift that he felt happy to give, and it was so easy, too. Any question they asked – and they asked a lot of them – he knew the answers and sent his words out into the air where they looked even more beautiful in front of him. Perfect little presents for everyone around him.

San had only given him a small dose, though, so it started to wear off around the same time they ran out of questions. And that’s when Jongho started to realise just how much he had shared. His face went bright red as he began to feel exposed; hopefully he would never have to do that again. Wooyoung gave him a look that said he completely understood, but there was also a hint of relief behind it.

He had passed their test, and everything would be fine again.

Everything was fine. Wasn’t it?

Mingi ran his hand through his brown hair, and frowned. He didn’t look as upset and cautious as before, though. So that was an improvement.

Right. Hermione, if you will?” San said and gestured to a chair beside Jongho’s.

She hesitated and said, “It might help if I take the anti-confundus potion, first. I feel a bit hazy from when whoever must have cast it, but it feels like…like I should have noticed something. But I can’t tell what it might be.”

San tilted his head to the side and thought. “Hmm. Well, it might still work. The potion I have with me usually needs to be taken close to when the charm was cast for it to have full effect. But we can try.”

Yeah,” Hongjoong agreed. “We took it just before the feast and even that left a little bit of a haze. Yeosang, Yunho, and I were busy with prefect things, so we don’t remember seeing anything unusual. But there was a definite before and after.”

She frowned, but nodded and held out her hand without another word. San fished through his robes and found the potion in a suspicious place before giving it to her. She sipped at it, and waited. And waited. And waited. All 8 of them watched to see if she would experience any sudden clarity.

And as soon as it seemed like she wouldn’t, her face brightened. “Oh,” she said. “The professor.”

The professor?” Yunho said, going wide-eyed. “I was facing McGonagall and she…”

Hermione shook her head. “No. There was another professor beside Hagrid. I didn’t recognize him. It’s still so shaky but I remember…I was looking at him. And he scanned all of us and then smirked with contempt; I thought it was so odd. But…the fog happened not long after, and then I have one memory of him putting his wand away. I hadn’t looked away from him – the fogginess just made me forget. But it had to be him. Why else would he look at us like that? And why would he have his wand out? We were already safe in front of Hagrid’s hut,” she said and scanned the 8 of them.

San nodded slowly. “That does check out,” he said and then turned to Yunho. “Didn’t you say that the prefects met all the professors just before the train trip?”

Yunho scratched his neck and thought for a minute. “Yeah, but there was one missing. We were told he would probably be there for the feast but personal business kept him.”

That’s suspicious AF,” Wooyoung said, and everyone agreed.

But why would he orchestrate an attack on the students?” Jongho asked, and his friends shared a dark look. Immediately after, Seonghwa crossed his arms and looked down at his feet.

Right – secrets.

They still hadn’t explained what had happened to them over the summer. And it had sounded like there was more to the creepy letter they received, too. Would they share it now that they had tested him?

But before he could figure out how to ask, Hermione said quietly, “What was your friend carrying?”

Everyone twitched as she asked. San looked at Wooyoung with a raised eyebrow as if to ask, you told her that much or she figured it out on her own? Wooyoung shrugged his shoulders and pointed at her with his palms facing up. She looked back and forth between them.

Veritaserum first – answers second,” Mingi said, and Hermione took a seat next to Jongho.
