03/14/24 – Also: COACHELLA ATEEZ SOON. Like…what? It’s less than a month away. How did time fly so fast. It feels like yesterday that they announced it and it’s already so close, now. Not that I’m going, but apparently there IS a free live broadcast on YouTube so…we just need to know what time their stage is.

Chapter 7 – More Surprises

The Gryffindor prefects wasted no time in reaching the common room. They wanted to explore, and they didn’t want to be responsible for a large group all night, so they set a fast and furious pace. Up the great hall steps, and then three more flights. A right, then a left, and then more stairs. This castle definitely had its differences, and Jongho was looking forward to finding them all.

A couple turns and arched hallways later and the large group finally stopped in front of familiar painting. The fat lady, dressed as usual in her pink dress. Jongho couldn’t stop smiling, and Wooyoung was practically bouncing on his feet. Everyone else looked like they were thinking the same thing Jongho was: they were home.

That is, everyone but Hermione. She was watching the students carefully as if she expected something to go wrong at any minute. Odd.

A prefect at the front called for silence. Once the chatter died down, the fat lady cleared her throat and spoke to all of them. “So many familiar faces,” she dabbed at tears that weren’t there. “My how you’ve grown! Naturally, I had to be part of this momentous occasion after seeing so many of you mature into your talented selves,” she said and looked pointedly at Harry, Ron, and Hermione. “I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”

Cheers rang out in the hall. She waited for them to quiet down again before continuing.

“And before I relay this week’s password to you all, I’m bound by duty to inform you of another tradition that will be added to both castles starting this year.” Whispers broke out at this. Hermione crossed her arms and bunched her eyebrows. Jongho nudged her, and she shook her head. She knew something, but wasn’t going to give it up.

Concerned, he looked back at the fat lady.

“In honor of breaking down boundaries, the faculty have collectively decided that each student should be sorted into a second house. While your main affiliation will remain with Gryffindor – after all, the sorting hat does not make mistakes – you will be given a second house out of three new ones: Birch, Hawthorne, and Willow.”

Not everyone was happy about this. The chatter turned negative. Harry and Ron both shared a look in silence, while Hermione frowned. Wooyoung had his poker face on – not a good sign. Clearly, he had a lot of thoughts about this, too. Their new friends were all whispering about it around them.

“How could they do this?” the one woman – Jennie – said.

“I don’t know. What happens if Slytherins end up with us? It won’t feel right,” Minho replied.

Jennie nodded in agreement. “How are they even going to decide? Will we be sorted again?”

Someone shouted and drew everyone’s attention, “Can’t we decide not to do this?” Everyone went quiet to listen to the response. The fat lady shook her head dramatically.

“While you may choose not to gather in the shared spaces, you will nonetheless be given a second affiliation. House points are tied to these, so it is in your best interests to forge some kind of bond with the other students in your second house. Sabotage will be a detriment to your main house.”

House points. Wow. Jongho’s jaw went slack at that. They must be really serious about this, then. No doubt it was to foster more cooperation, since the lack of it was what most people blamed the you-know-who situation on.

Jongho wondered if people would still try to sabotage things anyways.

“And furthermore. The tri-wizard guests will also be sorted into these three houses for the year, as they will participate in your courses and other school activities as exchange students. It will be up to you to show them the Hogwarts way, and make this year the best experience for them!” She clapped in excitement, but none of the students joined her except a few eager-looking ones at the front. Jongho didn’t recognize who they were, but they seemed like the type that were excited about most things.

If only he could summon that same energy. Just how many surprises were waiting for them this year?

“Ahem. I will now–“

But someone interrupted with another question. “How are we being sorted? Has the old hat been enchanted to do these new affiliations, too?”

“A good question, dear! The hat has indeed been requested for this most excellent process. Once the last of you have filed past my portrait, you will be temporarily locked in until our most precious relic is brought up to the common room for this purpose.” Groans filled the air, and the fat lady didn’t miss it. She hastily added, “Don’t despair! I believe we are first on the list tonight.”

It was clear that no one really liked this idea, but at least they didn’t have to wait long. It would give them a head start on exploring, too – none of the other houses would be out and about until they finished their sorting.

“Could be worse,” Wooyoung said to no one in particular and shrugged. Many of their new friends agreed, and started talking about what the meanings behind the new house names might be. Hermione was quiet, and seemed to know more than what was said. Jongho couldn’t fathom what it might be, but he didn’t miss how her frown had deepened even further. That couldn’t be good.

“The password for this week, which I will change promptly every Sunday at 10am, is ‘flexible.’ Merely speak the word, and I will open the way. And, welcome home,” she said and sniffled.

The prefect in front said it almost immediately and her portrait flew open to reveal an arched pathway. Students filed through two at a time. Jongho and Wooyoung filtered in beside each other, the latter grinning and taking it all in. The short hallway opened up into a giant octagonal space filled with couches, a few long tables with chairs, and three large fireplaces. Everything was decked out in the Gryffindor colors. Staircases were directly opposite the entryway.

The prefects stood at one of the tables and had stacks of papers in front of them. As they took names from the students closest to them, they cast spells to summon the correct papers and sent them on their way up the stairs. Those must be the maps and timetables. A few people were already climbing by the time Jongho and Wooyoung entered the room.

Jongho tracked them for a little while and then looked all the way up. He gasped. The roof was so far away that this may as well have been a cathedral. He had never been in one before, and he could barely believe what he was seeing. The new castle was huge from the outside, but seeing this up close was incredible.

Wooyoung followed Jongho’s gaze and let out a whistle. “Dang. They went all out on this, huh? No wonder it took so long. I forgive them,” he said and nodded. Jennie and Minho snorted their agreement.

Hermione was still silent beside Jongho.

—–

Slower than anyone liked, everyone got their maps and timetables and found their way up to their sleeping quarters. Jongho was sharing a room with Wooyoung on the second floor, luckily, and they took four-poster beds next to each other. Minho ended up in the same room as them, along with Harry and Ron. They didn’t recognize the other two, but quickly learned their names: John and Dennis.

They didn’t get more time to talk, though. McGonagall’s amplified voice rang out through the stairways and called them back down.

The hat must be here.

The 7 of them grinned at each other and bolted for the door, racing down. The stairways were crowded within seconds. Everyone wanted to get this done and over with and to go exploring.

McGonagall was standing in the middle of the room beside a single chair, the hat in her hands. Her eyes followed the last person as they trickled down the stairs.

“May I be the first to welcome you to your new common room. As you’ve already been told, there are three new houses that everyone will be sorted into as second affiliations. These houses are Birch, Hawthorne, and Willow. Myself and the staff consulted heavily with the wizarding community on the selection of these names.” Her eyes twinkled as she paused to survey the room.

“Birch trees, of which the house Birch is named after, are commonly known as a symbol of rebirth, growth, and strength. Those with experience of those themes throughout their lives will likely end up in this house.” Murmurs filled the room and McGonagall paused until there was silence again. She must have known everyone would be excited and want to talk about it all. Her eyes didn’t land on anyone specific and she instead surveyed everyone equally.

“Hawthorne is a symbol of protection, a strong heart, and creativity. Students with experience in those themes will find it a welcoming place.” More murmuring. She waited for it to settle again. “And finally, Willow students will be known for themes of healing, adaptability, and resilience.”

There was an equal amount of chatter as each house was explained. Jongho didn’t know which one he preferred, and looked around at the others. Hermione had somehow found her way over to him and she offered him a small smile, although her face was pale. Had something happened in the dorm?

“As you can guess, each house was chosen with different qualities that each of you either have experience in,” she looked at Harry, and then moved her gaze to Wooyoung, “or have great potential for.” Wooyoung puffed up his chest and nudged Jongho, and Jongho smiled back. One of Wooyoung’s only flaws was that he didn’t give himself enough credit for the talents he already had. Jongho wondered which one his friend was hoping to have potential in that he was likely already great with.

He didn’t have to wait long to find out his friends’ thoughts. “Birch – it’s gotta be Birch for me,” Wooyoung said. Jongho raised his eyebrows in surprise, and Wooyoung didn’t miss it. “What? I’ve got potential to be strong! It’s gotta be that one for me.”

Jongho grinned and clapped his friend on the shoulder. Neither of them had time to say any more.

“Now, when I call out your name, please step forward and I’ll place the sorting hat on your head. Just like the first time,” McGonagall said and smiled.

She began calling names, and the sorting began.

******

“Harry Potter,” McGonagall said. About half of the room had been sorted already, and people were beginning to group up in their second affiliations. Most students had ended up in Birch so far, but there were still a few that had found their way into the other two. The entire room went quiet as Harry’s name was called. Which house would he end up in?

Harry walked up from somewhere behind Jongho, and McGonagall set the hat on his head. After a few moments of silence, the hat said, “Willow!” and gasps went around the room. It was the same house that Ginny had been sorted into. And although no one had been surprised at her placement, they certainly hadn’t expected Harry to end up there with her.

Whispers followed him as he made his way over to where she and a few others were standing. They gave each other a half hug and Ron rolled his eyes just as his name was called.

“Ronald Weasley,” McGonagall said. He stepped forward and the hat hardly touched his head before it went, “Willow!” Ron grinned from ear to ear as more gasps went around the room. Was Willow the house that all Weasley’s would end up into? The weight of the moment landed on everyone at the same time – this was a new tradition in the middle of being formed right in front of their eyes, and they were part of it.

“Jongho Choi,” McGonagall said. He stepped forward with a clear mind. Each house seemed nice to him, and he didn’t mind which he ended up in. As soon as the hat touched his head, he heard the familiar voice in his mind. Hmm. What an interesting story, indeed, it said.

Interesting story? Jongho thought back.

Mm-yes. My new enchantments give me greater ability to see possibilities, and yours are extraordinary. What you missed out on in the summer, and what you may face in the future – the energy of each new house is all here. Any would suit you well because of it. This is the most difficult choice so far. Where to put you?

So even the hat didn’t know what to make of him? And how could it know about what had happened in the summer when even he didn’t? Jongho suddenly remembered everything that had happened tonight and felt the weight of what he still had to clear up with his friends. He sighed.

Ah-I see. Then, it had better be…

“Hawthorne!” the hat said. And over in the corner, the little group of Hawthorne’s let out a cheer. Jongho didn’t recognize any of them, but they were happy to see him join them nonetheless. More and more the students were warming up to the idea of second houses, but Hawthorne was the most vocal about it.

“Wooyoung Jung,” McGonagall said. Jongho watched his friend step up. The hat wasn’t on his head too long when it shouted, “Hawthorne!” Wooyoung blinked in surprise, but Jongho cheered with the rest of the Hawthorne’s and beckoned his friend over. Wooyoung approached slowly at first, but picked up speed as he saw the enthusiasm. Jongho thought this house was perfect for his friend; Wooyoung just didn’t know it yet.

“Hermione Granger.” Hermione stepped up and just like with Ron, the hat barely touched her head when it shouted, “Hawthorne!” She smiled and sighed in relief as the cheers of the Hawthorne’s got even louder. Ron, however, was scowling from where he was stood with the Willow’s. Harry and Ginny looked a little concerned.

The sorting continued until everyone had their second affiliation. Most had gone to Birch, but there were still a decent amount in Hawthorne and Willow. McGonagall didn’t give them time to chat after the sorting ended.

“Now, on your maps, you’ll see instructions appear as to how to find your affiliation common rooms. Each of them are equipped with special spaces and resources to help you with your studies this year. Activities to encourage gathering in those spaces as a house will be prepared weekly, and house points will be awarded for attendance.”

Some murmurs went around the room. People were wondering what the activities might entail, and some were suspicious because of the test at the lake. From what they were saying, none of them knew it was actually an attack. Jongho shared a quick look with Wooyoung, and Hermione saw them both. She nudged Jongho and they returned their eyes to McGonagall.

McGonagall was gazing at everyone with pride written all over her face. When she spoke again, her voice hitched ever so slightly. “Now, as there are so many attendees for this first year, we have also decided that Quidditch will go ahead as planned instead of being cancelled for the Tri-Wizard tournament. The campus is equipped to handle both, this year.” Wooyoung muttered, Yessss, as she kept speaking.

“And in addition to the four main houses, there will also be teams formed for the new three. This is to give more opportunities to everyone – including our guests from the other schools. Tryout information will be posted in the various common rooms in the coming week.”

Cheers broke out – no one could contain their excitement. Everyone had double the chances to end up on a team which is something that all of the quidditch enthusiasts were excited about.

“And that’s all for tonight. Remember that curfew is set for 1am, even tonight. Your courses start tomorrow, although surprise examinations may occur at any time.” She said that last bit with a twinkle in her eye, and Jongho frowned. More examinations like the attack at the lake? He didn’t like the sound of that.

As McGonagall turned to leave, someone in Hawthorne spoke up. “Hawthornes – shall we check out our common space before any of the other main houses get sorted there?” Heads nodded, and some shouted their enthusiasm. Wooyoung, Jongho, and Hermione all nodded at each other. They would go with them at first – and then they’d find a way to separate and find their own space. It was time to sort things out
