Also: Our sweetie pie Ateez are coming back on December 1st, 2023! As a babytiny, it's my first comeback with them, and I'm very excited!

But I'm also sad...because our Seonghwa has just lost his grandmother. Sending him and his family condolences, and warm wishes as they go through this difficult time <3 It must be extra hard for him since he was so far away from home, too 🙁 I hope he goes easy on himself, and processes things the way he needs to.

If you want to express your condolences/warm thoughts, AteezOfficial made an announcement post on Twitter where comments can be left.

Chapter 1 - A New Beginning

Seonghwa was nowhere to be found – again – and Jongho was looking for him. As first years going into the new university program at Hogwarts, they were both supposed to take the special trip across the lake – and soon. The boats were already coming into view. Taking those across the lake had always been a first year tradition. Now that there were two types of first year at Hogwarts, everyone felt like it made sense to apply that tradition to both.

The purpose of adding a university curriculum was to bring more structure to the wizarding world, and prevent any disasters like what had happened with he-who-must-not-be-named. A muggle born had suggested it because they had heard from family that higher education is what usually helped the muggles adapt to their adult lives.

Everyone in the magical community had liked the idea. “It will help better prepare them for the real world, the grown-up wizarding world,” they said. It didn’t take much to convince parents, faculty, and politicians.

Plus: they had to rebuild parts of Hogwarts, anyways, so it wasn’t hard to add new sections in the middle of that.

When Hogwarts reopened, the new program and university wings of the castle took a few more years to finalize. And rumour had it that even Harry Potter and his friends had enrolled, as a gesture of support for the positive changes in the wizarding world. It was going to be a strange first year, with everyone in such different stages of life and experience, but everyone was positive that it would work out okay.

“University students, gather over this way once the younger firs’ years go. Prefects over here,” professor Hagrid said with a twinkle in his eye. He had been given back his old position very quickly after the battle of Hogwarts, although he was now assigned to the university side of things. The excitement was written all over him. He had wanted to teach about dragons and other such magical creatures that were too dangerous for the younger witches and wizards, and that’s exactly what he was going to be doing.

Jongho noted the place they would have to gather, and then quietly scanned around for Seonghwa. Even though it was packed with more students than usual, he had to be here somewhere. They had sat together on the train, and walked towards the exit together, but Jongho hadn’t paid attention after that.

He should have known better.

Like usual, Seonghwa had found a reason – and a way – to quietly slip away. No doubt he would resurface with either something interesting in his hands or talking about some wild adventure, but Jongho preferred to find him before those things happened...just in case.

He scanned the crowd once again. Seonghwa was hard to spot when he didn’t want to be found, but Jongho had a special knack for it and wasn’t worried. Yet.

Someone else wanted his attention, though. “Jongho!” a voice echoed around the full platform. That someone had done a vocal modification spell, and probably for the extra attention.

Jongho knew exactly who it was and grinned as he zeroed in on the direction it came from until – ah, there. A shorter man with oreo hair was waving and jumping around enthusiastically, earning a mixture of smiles and groans from those around him. He was popular and people loved him, but space was limited.

“C’mon, Wooyoung,” a girl yelled from nearby after being jostled too much. “I know you’re excited, but let’s keep that energy for the pitch, yeah? Boats and excitement don’t exactly mix.”

Wooyoung stopped jumping and smirked at her. His voice still amplified, he said, “You underestimate my power! I’ve got plenty of energy to go around. How about Friday at 8?”

“In your dreams, Wooyoung. I don’t date seekers,” the girl scoffed and turned around to watch the boats get closer to the shore.

“What about Gryffindor seekers?” Wooyoung quipped back, and this time everyone groaned.

“Especially not those.” A few snickers and giggles.

Before Wooyoung could respond, though, a voice laced with honey cut through the crowd. “Hey, isn’t that quote from Anakin something I should be saying?”

San. Wearing as much Slytherin gear as he possibly could – from his hat, to his scarf, and even the special pin on his robes. It would have looked ridiculous except...San could pull off anything. There was just something about him that made it all work.

Wooyoung swivelled around. “HA!” he voiced. It echoed around so loud that students cringed and cuffed their ears. He noticed and more quietly said, “I’m a fan too,” and pointed his wand at his throat to reverse the amplifying spell.

“Yeah but not a fan of the sith side of things. You’re more of a jedi type, aren’t you?” San cocked his head and said with his signature smile.

“I -” Woo started to say, but was interrupted.

“Is someone talking about Star Wars?” Seonghwa asked, appearing wide-eyed and just a few students behind Wooyoung.

Jongho laughed at the timing. Of course that conversation would be what summoned his friend into the open. “There you are,” he yelled with a smile still on his face. San and Wooyoung began a fake light sabre battle, while Seonghwa nodded to Jongho and then discreetly placed something inside his robes.

Jongho sighed internally – it looked like only he had seen the suspicious movement. But whatever it was that Seonghwa needed to hide, it meant that the Hufflepuff dorm was probably in for an interesting night – unless Jongho went over there to confiscate it. But at least it wouldn’t be Gryffindor, and he would be able to get a good nights rest.

Oh, wait,” Jongho realised. “Wasn’t Hwa talking about dragons the whole train ride here? He eyed Seonghwa suspiciously, hoping to find answers, but the latter was now staring determinedly at the approaching boats.

Time to go over there, then.

Jongho shifted his weight and caught the eye of the student next to him to indicate that he wanted to cut through. The student stepped back to make room, but a big hand clapped down on Jongho’s shoulder before he could move. He stopped and twisted around, instantly on guard.

“Hey, hey,” Mingi said with eyebrows disappearing into his bangs, and eyes wide. Aside from the obvious emotions playing across his face, the rest of him looked calm and orderly. Only a sliver of green could be seen on the lining of his robes, too. Unlike San, Mingi didn’t openly display his pride for his house. Whatever he really thought of being there, no one knew. He acted like he loved it, but it was never possible to know for sure what Mingi felt about things.

Some people moved and shuffled around as Yunho appeared, too. The Hufflepuff gold in his scarf almost made him look like he had an angelic glow around him. He smiled a friendly smile at Jongho, and tapped Mingi’s arm affectionately.

“Hey, great. This is great. We found Jongho. But I need to take a boat with the prefects,” Yunho said and nodded towards where Hagrid and some students with silver badges were gathered. Two of the prefects – both Ravenclaws, both also friends – were looking back at him. Hongjoong waved enthusiastically, but Yeosang stared with furrowed brows.

Protest flashed in Mingi’s eyes for the briefest second – he clearly didn’t want Yunho to leave his side - but the expression was gone too fast for anyone but Jongho to notice. Jongho almost never missed things like this.

What was that about, he thought.

“And hey – remember the hint I gave you, ok?” Yunho leaned in to whisper. “There’s big things planned for this year,” he said and winked.

Mingi replied casually, “Of course, of course. See you at the banquet,” and waved. Jongho nodded his agreement, too, but continued to wonder what was going on between his friends. He hadn’t seen them all summer, as short as it was, and something seemed radically different. He could guess that Yunho’s tip was something he would soon find out about, and no doubt Mingi would keep them both safe. But...what was behind it all? Seonghwa hadn’t said anything about any of them on the train.

Together, Mingi and Jongho watched Yunho work his way through the crowd over to where the prefects were. And while Hongjoong greeted Yunho enthusiastically, Yeosang continued to stare at Mingi with cold eyes. Mingi looked down at his feet after just a few seconds of it.

What the hell? Yeosang was never like this.

But Jongho didn’t have time to think about it. Hagrid called out once more. “All righ, All righ, firs’ years for the regular school firs’! University firs’ years, you’ll be next! Let the young ones through.”

Mingi dug his fingers into Jongho’s shoulder.
